Telmo Rodriguez, Gaba do Xil Mencia Tinto

£18.92
Telmo Rodríguez is one of Spain's greatest winemakers. He made a name for himself when he started his own wine business in the 1990s with fellow winemaker Pablo Eguzkiza. Together their vision was to soley work with native grape varieties and revive forgotten or abandoned vineyards in various regions throughout Spain. With Spain only slowly starting to recognise and explore the beauty in its indigenous grape varieties, Telmo and his dedicated team have long been ahead of their game.

Mencía is an incredibly exciting grape that’s both refreshing (here, due to the Atlantic influence in Valdeorras) and complex. Gaba do Xil doesn’t disappoint. The wine is unoaked, so the purity of the fruit character shines through, long onto the finish. Try this with cured meats, aubergine dishes or even lamb curry.

Tasting Note:
The nose is spicy and herbal, with aromas of thyme, cherry and violet, followed by a fruit-driven palate with supple tannins.
