Teliani Glekhuri Kisiskhevi Saperavi

£24.02
Teliani is an old winery dating back to the 1800s and they have survived the various incursions into Georgia from their northern neighbours including the Soviet invasion of the 1920s. They still produce a lot of wine for the Russian market – they would be stupid not to – but they are astute enough to not want this to be the sum of what they do, and self-aware enough to imagine what could be possible if they develop the right philosophy for their business. They have a team of innovative young winemakers who are given the time, equipment, fruit and support they need to create really exciting things, and we think some of that is evident in the selection we have here.

Due to the size of the qvevri (terracotta vessels), production is limited to 6500 bottles only. Once fermentation is complete, the grape skins are removed and the wine spends further time maturing in the qvevri before bottling. Kisiskhevi is a superb terroir within the wider Kakheti region, particularly for Saperavi. The best grapes are selected for fermentation in Qvevri, resulting in a deep coloured and structured wine that is still remarkably approachable due to its vibrant primary fruit and roasted nut aromas.
