Domaine Fiumicicoli Vermentino Blanc, Corse Sartene

£19.70
Domaine Fiumicicoli (pronounced phew-me-chikoli) lies at the heart of Corse Sartène, considered to be one of the best of Corsica's nine appellations and close to where the 13th century, Pisan-style bridge, Pont de Spina Cavallu (pictured on their wine labels), spans the river Rizzanesse. The domaine’s vineyards rise up from the slopes of the river on arenaceous and granitic soils, ideally suited to growing the traditional Corsican grape varieties of Sciacarello (from which the domaine makes its rosés), Vermentino (for its whites) and Nielluccio (for its reds, usually blended with a little Syrah).

The vineyards are situated in the heart of the Corse Sartène appellation on slopes just inland from the coast which benefit from cooling sea breezes and a cooler mountain climate, preserving the freshness of the Vermentino. The soil is granitic and the vines are tended manually and organically. Typically fresh and aromatic Vermentino with scents of orange blossom, slight herbal notes and lemon balm. Elegant and very pure ripe fruit with a wonderful balance and minerality followed by a crisp finish. This is slightly savoury and very satisfying. Match with grilled fish, shellfish, grilled chicken harissa, spring vegetable risotto.
