Domaine Fiumicicoli Rouge, Corse Sartene

£19.70
Domaine Fiumicicoli (pronounced phew-me-chikoli) lies at the heart of Corse Sartène, considered to be one of the best of Corsica's nine appellations and close to where the 13th century, Pisan-style bridge, Pont de Spina Cavallu (pictured on their wine labels), spans the river Rizzanesse. The domaine’s vineyards rise up from the slopes of the river on arenaceous and granitic soils, ideally suited to growing the traditional Corsican grape varieties of Sciacarello (from which the domaine makes its rosés), Vermentino (for its whites) and Nielluccio (for its reds, usually blended with a little Syrah).

"The vineyards are 15km inland from the sea on predominantly granitic slopes at high altitude. The mountain climate is favourable, with plentiful sunshine, low rainfall, and when combined with the maritime influence and cool summer nights, it ensures a long ripening period that allows the grapes to develop complex flavours. Fresh, vibrant red cherry fruit with a herby edge on the nose, the palate is fleshy and characterful with a hint of Italian rusticity and some balancing structure. A tasty, country red with just a touch of tannin. Great with a variety of foods - spicy pasta, charcuterie and wild boar sausages.
