Cederberg Chenin Blanc, Private Cellar

£16.92

A legitimately unique and wildly remote terroir in South Africa, Cederberg climbs to over 1000 metres altitude above sea level; Cederberg Private Cellar is the only estate making wine here. Historically others have tried, and failed, to make viticulture work for them in this hostile and arid region, but only the Nieuwoudt family have stayed the course. To produce any wine at all here, let alone make some of South Africa’s most admired wines, is testimony to the passion and commitment of owner/winemaker David Nieuwoudt, the fifth generation Nieuwoudt running the farm.

France has grown Chenin for 1300 years. South Africa has “only” been involved since 1659. However, the newcomers are rapidly becoming the spiritual home and this example is very good indeed. Cederberg’s Chenin Blanc is one of the most successful examples in the Cape and this 2020 vintage shows true purity of fruit. The Chenin grapes are rested on Sauvignon grape skins giving this wine some real power.

Tasting Note:
A powerful bouquet of tropical melon, grapefruit and lemon peel precedes a fruit-laden palate.
